How does one start with a CSM?
Casting on with a CSM…

In order to start working or knitting on a Circular Sock Knitting machine, one needs to add tension to the installed cylinder needles - this is done by using something called a “Cast-On” or “Start-Up” “Device” or “Bonnet” or “Cast-On Bonnet”.

There are a variety of ways to start on a CSM from using scrap yarn like a web (how), using an antique umbrella-like device (referred often to “Set-Up Device”, using a Fred Hauck Cork-Screw-Like “Bent Rod” device (how), using an improvised temporary net onion re-purposed bag (how) or using a ‘Bonnet’ (regular fiber or split ring). Fiber or Regular Cast-On Bonnets made into tubes need to have a different bonnet for each cylinder one owns as they are cylinder specific.

ABOUT UNIVERSAL BONNETS:
April 2019 I developed a Universal Split Ring Flat Bonnet (click here for an intro). At the time the only multi-cylinder capable cast on item was the antique metal Set-Up Tool, the Bent Rod by Fred Hauck or to use a janky and fragile onion net bag.

It is my opinion that the Split-Ring Bonnets make casting on much easier.

Why not something universal?

Introducing my ”Universal Bonnet” (a worked flat panel with 6mm split rings on one end) that can be built on your largest stitch count cylinder with or without the 6mm and can be used on ANY of your cylinders equal or of less needle slots to the one it was built on. A deluxe version is two ended - meaning rings are added to the beginning and end edges for a very useful bonnet.
