After-Thought/Shaker Socks

Make socks from a knitted tube

Be sure to ask the tube maker to make the CSM tube in reverse (normal forward worked tubes on the CSM are knitted counter clockwise) so that the hand knitter can add the hand knitted segments in the regular hand knitted clockwise direction - however a counterclockwise worked CSM tube can still be worked by a hand knitter using a variety of methods. If you have a tube that is as worked on a CSM going “forward”, create your socks by…

-“I just start knitting the other direction and use the tail to close the gap when I'm done”

-“If you turn it inside out you could continue knitting cc using puri stitches. Or, slip one stitch, pass yarn through the opening, put that stitch back on the needle and knit.

(Hand knitting term is wrap and turn if you look it up to see a picture or video.)”

-“If the tube was cranked clockwise that was intentionally made for a hand knitter. Tubes are cranked backwards so one could unravel rows for a cuff, add an afterthought heel, and remove waste yarn to knit the toes by unraveling rows. If it was cranked the opposite direction of the way crankers usually crank tubes you don't have to turn it inside out. If it is one continuous tube, find the middle and split the tube by marking said row with stitch marker. You will then clip a stitch and unravel. If it is a striped tube that is a different method and you will need to find the repeat. These socks are a lot of fun to knit but there is a method. The only place there is a small hole is on the beginning stitch when picking up stitches for afterthought heels.”

-“I crank tubes to hand knit toes, heel, cuff. Just "wrap and turn" for the toe and you're then going in the correct direction. Heels...no issue since you cut in. For cuffs, turn inside out and K2,P2. Easy peasy...no reason to crank in other direction.“

Sometimes the adding of a cuff/heel and toe to a tube of knitted work is referred to as creating “after thought heels/toes”. Below are links to free instructions.
