  • Supergarne Woolverstand - Denmark | Website | Website link shows English site with US dollar currency. If having an issue accessing simply search “supergarne”.

Sign up for their newsletter! They often have sales. I tend to buy from this supplier as I live in CANADA. I generally buy the coned 4 ply yarn on the 400-400gram cones. They ship standard with DHL so for my own purchase I ensure I do a minimum four cone order to lower the cost per cone for my own peace of mind. With 2-4 day tracked shipping this makes this supplier (in my opinion) the least expensive cone supplier I know of**. This supplier also offers balls of yarn in 100g skeins. (If you live in the United States you may find it easier to order from whatever selection Jamie Mayfield of csmsupplies.com offers). **Buying direct from Supergarne note: Besides having the most selection, on a recent June 2021 3x400g cone (14.99eur listed but $12.39eur charged) per three cones, plus 2-4 day $45eur shipping totals $82.17EUR/$126.30CAD+ $20.59cad duty/customs works out to $48.96CAD per cone (with 2-4 day tracked shipping).

  • Twisted and Tangled Fibre Studio - New Brunswick, Canada - Nancy Colpitts | Facebook sales group - Yarn In Stock | Facebook | Phone: +1 (506) 457-8779 | Email: twistedandtangledfibrestudio@gmail.com | Supplier of Yeoman Yarns, Hand Spun Yarns, Hand Dyed Yarns, Yarn on Cones for Machine Knitting and Weaving. SCRAP YARN

USEFUL TIP: Buying cones of acrylic online often it can be confusing when it’s named as a fraction. With the different yarn properties the fractions will differ for what will work on the machine but in terms of acrylic fibre:

Lana Chévez 2/12 or 3/15 would be near sock yarn wright.

2/24 or 2/30 for finer fabric.

IN TERMS OF WHERE…

Generally as someone living in Canada I find it sometimes cheaper to get my scrap sock weight acrylic cones off eBay, usually by searching for “Tamm” or “bramwell” - just don’t get the “super fine” acrylic as it’s pretty thin (unless you want that or will pair it with a other fibre). I am in no way an expert in deciphering yarn thickness fractions when it comes to buying yarn. Honestly anyone else can help you more with this. However I am trying. Here’s what I’ve been advised:

  • 2/28 is thinner. Approx 3 strands for a 72 or 80 cylinder sock.

  • 2/20 is New Metric. Sock wool is normally 2/8.4. To understand you convert to a 1/ figure. Then it tells you how many kilometres of yarn you have per kilogram. Sock wool becomes 1/4.2 meaning 420m per 100g.

The above was kind info from Eric Sharp. Thank you!

You probably know more on this than I do but I saw and wanted to share

Myth: All wool is scratchy and uncomfortable.

Fact: Different types of wool (and treatment of that wool) have differing amounts of scratchiness. Here’s a scan of different fibers using a microscope. Wool is made from the hair of sheep. This hair has scales on the surface of the fiber. The size of these scales is different for different breeds of sheep. Smaller scales are less scratchy. Larger scales are more scratchy.

Wool which is carded (hairs pulled in opposite directions) will be scratchier than wool which is combed (hairs all aligned in the same direction).

Coincidentally these scales are also the reason wool is more prone to shrinking in the wash. Carded wool (with the scales in opposite directions) will shrink more readily than combed wool

Surface applications (conditioners and sizing) can also fill the gulfs between the scales to help wool to feel less scratchy. Keep in mind these surface applications will probably be stripped off the more the wool is washed.

Mohair has very small scales. Cashmere, which is actually goat hair, and Alpaca also have very small scales.

Also, if you are allergic to wool (or lanolin) I've been told that alpaca is a good alternative.
