CSM LOVE INDEX

Introducing a site-wide cross-referencing sorted by category to save you the reader more time on finding what you seek. This will further help you find what you seek in a more precise way. This is a work in progress just starting now.

For example: You want to know how to work a HUNG HEM (if you knew what that was?). This page will show you where you can go within its electronic folds to find that specific info. Enjoy!

CYLINDER(Tension Dial) - MARKING

PAGE: CSM Start 3 (Tension Dial) | My ideas and upgrades |
BLOG: Feb 8/19 Cylinder Marking |

CYLINDER - COMPOUND

A compound cylinder is simply a special cylinder where the needles are located not on the outside edge but more in the middle allowing for a “smaller diameter” creating a smaller diameter item without needing to change machines. They require special needles. Personally I feel I can get the same results with a lower slot count cylinder than a compound cylinder but some persons feel differently about that. There are 3D printed compound cylinder/ribber dials being made by persons online. I’ve included photos of two cylinders to show visually how they can differ. This is not the ONLY supplier just an example.

HUNG HEM (AKA TURNED HEM)

WHAT: A hung hem is the fold over and attachment of the first row knitted to the current row of knitting to create a hem (not unlike the hem of your jeans). It’s used to secure the first row of live stitches and create a clean edge.

PEDAL POWERED (See POWERED)

PICOT

WHAT: Picot is the method of placing two stitches on one needle and repeating around the cylinder. This creates a scalloped edge of sort that is used for Cast On Bonnets and in some cases, a decorative edge.
VIDEO: Make your own CSM Cast On Bonnet | How to make: Universal Split-Ring Flat Cast-On Bonnet |

Pitch (Half/Full)

WHAT: Half pitch is usually done to gain the extra stitches to make a hat or more needle needed item. Generically worked then those rib stitches let to run or undo to add diameter to an adult hat.

Full pitch is when a ribber needle is aligned to a empty cylinder slot (regular ribbing).

SELVEAGE (The Welt)

The “Welt” is another word referring to the Selvage which is the method of locking in the beginning row on a cuff down sock so that once off the machine the live stitches won’t undo when the scrap yarn is removed.

SCALLOP EDGE (Selvage)

SIZING SOCKS

Because NO ONE can predict how many rows your machine will need to finish a specific sized sock if you are not using the identical machine, yarn and settings, do expect to take notes. True sock size will not be known until after wash and hung to dry. This is when I use my awesome adjustable sock blockers to take photos and to further easily confirm worked size.

INDEX: (Related) GAUGE / SWATCHING and TENSION DIAL

However there are others that recommend alternatives (these did not work for me).

Dean & Bean 3D newer printed machine makers created a whole formula to do tact which cylinder is best for which full knit (no mock rib or ribbed or Lycra socks). You will have to goto their website/info can be found on the NEW CSM MACHINES (under the “supplies” menu). I create a huge variety of sized socks mostly on my 72 needle slot cylinder with mock or real ribbing for best fit.

David Kettman whose info can be found on the SUPPLIERS page under the “supplies” menu directs sock sizing by knitted gauge and sells reference sheets.

Cheri Carrol (also presents herself as “KnitpickinSocks”) feels a specialized excel spreadsheet with a formula can predict this. She sells on ETSY.

Still others suggest sock rulers which can be put into the sock to advise sock sizing. Just search online for that.

SLOTTING YOUR MACHINE

Note: Slotting refers to changing the part so that one can remove loaded yarn without cutting it. Very convenient when doing patterns or colorwork.
